After months of public consultation, the vote brings a long-debated infrastructure project one step closer to breaking ground — but controversy remains.
Zürich's daytime car ban on the Langstrasse has been made more visible with the installation of new illuminated variable signals at the Brauerstrasse and Dienerstrasse intersections. The ban applies between 05:30 and 22:00 and has been in force since September 2023. Stadt Zürich
The move came after years of widespread non-compliance. In its first month alone, the automated enforcement system generated CHF 1.7 million in fines, and the city collected a total of CHF 5.3 million from violations in 2024. In 2025, police issued 3,396 fines for violations of the daytime ban. NZZStadt Zürich
The new signals cost CHF 360,000 to install. City police will now use automated traffic counts to monitor whether the volume of cars passing through increases or decreases following their introduction
